Delta Learning developing sales leaders to improve team performance and commercial results

Developing the Next Generation of Sales Leaders Through the ASPIRE Sales Leadership Academy

The Challenge

From high-performing salesperson to effective sales leader

Worldpay had identified significant leadership potential within its SME and Corporate sales teams. There were talented salespeople with the ambition and potential to progress into leadership roles, but there was no structured framework in place to help them make that transition successfully.

The challenge was familiar: being a great salesperson does not automatically make someone a great sales leader.

The skills that drive individual sales performance are different from those required to lead, coach and develop others. Emerging leaders need to broaden their perspective, develop new leadership behaviours and become comfortable making decisions that affect the performance of an entire team.

Worldpay wanted to create a development programme that would accelerate this transition — giving high-potential individuals the knowledge, experience, confidence and self-awareness they would need to become effective sales leaders.

The programme also needed to be more than a traditional classroom-based leadership course. Worldpay wanted something challenging, engaging and immersive that would push participants beyond their normal ways of thinking and create genuine personal development.

The Solution

The ASPIRE Sales Leadership Academy

Worldpay partnered with Delta Learning to design, build and deliver a bespoke ASPIRE Sales Leadership Academy for nine aspiring leaders drawn from its SME and Corporate sales teams.

The objective was clear: accelerate leadership capability by giving participants access to the experiences, frameworks and challenges that would otherwise take years to develop through experience alone.

ASPIRE was designed around five core sales leadership capabilities and combined structured learning with experiential development, self-directed study, coaching, peer learning and practical application.

Rather than simply telling participants what effective leadership looks like, the programme challenged them to examine how they actually behaved as leaders — particularly when faced with uncertainty, pressure, competition and unfamiliar situations.

The result was an intensive development experience designed to help participants move from salesperson to sales leader.

Building leadership capability through experience

A central principle of the ASPIRE Academy was that leadership development should be experienced, not simply discussed.

The programme therefore began with a two-day immersive experiential challenge designed to take participants well outside their comfort zones.

Participants faced unfamiliar mental and physical challenges, working together under increasing levels of pressure, time constraint and competition. Roles were deliberately changed throughout the experience so that participants could experience situations from different perspectives — both as leaders and as team members.

The objective wasn’t simply to create a memorable experience.

It was to increase self-awareness.

Participants were able to observe how they responded to pressure, how they communicated, how they made decisions and how they influenced others. They could then use these insights as a foundation for their wider leadership development.

Measuring leadership capability from the outset

ASPIRE began and ended with 360-degree feedback, giving participants an objective view of their leadership capability and development areas.

The feedback was structured around the five core leadership capabilities within the Academy framework.

This gave each participant a clear starting point for their development and created an opportunity to measure progress at the end of the programme.

Rather than relying solely on self-assessment, participants were able to understand how their leadership behaviours were perceived by colleagues and use that insight to identify where they needed to develop.

For emerging leaders, this level of self-awareness is critical.

Moving into leadership means understanding not just what you do, but the impact your behaviour has on other people.

A blended approach to leadership development

The ASPIRE Sales Leadership Academy used a modular approach, combining different forms of learning and development to create a sustained experience rather than a one-off training intervention.

Participants completed five substantial written assignments, requiring independent research and study around each of the core leadership capabilities. Each assignment was assessed and feedback provided.

Three interactive workshops provided opportunities to explore the leadership concepts in greater depth, share experiences with peers and apply learning to practical situations.

Participants also received one-to-one coaching throughout the programme, supporting their individual development needs and helping them translate learning into action.

Five additional coaching challenges focused specifically on the practical application of coaching — giving participants opportunities to consider how they would coach others through real leadership situations.

This combination of self-directed learning, peer learning, workshops, coaching and practical challenges encouraged participants to take ownership of their own development while learning from the experience of others.

Developing leaders who can coach others

Coaching was a particularly important component of the ASPIRE programme.

As sales leaders, participants would be responsible not only for achieving commercial results, but for helping others improve their performance.

That requires a fundamental shift in mindset.

Instead of solving every problem themselves, effective sales leaders need to ask better questions, create accountability, provide useful feedback and help their people develop their own capability.

The ASPIRE coaching challenges gave participants an opportunity to practise this before stepping fully into leadership roles.

They were required to think through specific coaching situations, consider their approach and receive feedback on how effectively they would handle them.

This helped turn coaching from a theoretical leadership concept into a practical skill.

Creating a strong peer learning environment

The cohort dynamic was another important part of the Academy.

Participants came from different areas of Worldpay’s sales organisation, bringing different experiences, strengths and perspectives to the programme.

Rather than learning in isolation, they were encouraged to challenge one another, share experiences and draw on the collective knowledge of the group.

This created an environment where participants were not only developing their own leadership capability, but learning how other people approached problems and made decisions.

For emerging leaders, that broader perspective can be transformational.

Leadership requires the ability to see beyond your own experience — and peer learning provides an effective way to accelerate that process.

Bringing the learning together

The ASPIRE Academy culminated in a Dragon’s Den-style report-out session.

Each participant was required to present to an audience of fellow participants and senior stakeholders within Worldpay, reflecting on the impact of the Academy on both themselves and the business.

This final challenge required participants to bring together their learning, communicate with senior stakeholders and demonstrate the confidence to articulate their ideas and leadership perspective.

It provided a fitting conclusion to a programme built around stretching participants beyond their comfort zones.

The Impact

Accelerating the transition into sales leadership

The ASPIRE Sales Leadership Academy delivered a clear and measurable impact.

Of the nine participants in the first Worldpay cohort, three had stepped into leadership roles before the Academy had even concluded.

For the remaining participants, feedback from their line managers highlighted significant changes in everyday performance, confidence and personal impact.

The programme helped participants begin to think differently about leadership — moving beyond their individual sales responsibilities and considering the wider impact of their decisions, behaviours and influence.

Worldpay’s Head of Sales Execution, Jen Tipper, highlighted the transformation she saw across the cohort, particularly the growth in confidence and the shift in mindset from salesperson to leader.

The outcome was not simply a group of better-trained salespeople.

It was a developing pipeline of people with the confidence, self-awareness and leadership capability to take on greater responsibility.

These participant experiences reinforce an important principle behind the Academy: effective leadership development isn’t simply about acquiring more knowledge. It is about changing how people think, behave and lead.

The ASPIRE Sales Leadership Academy

ASPIRE was designed specifically for new and aspiring sales leaders — people who have demonstrated the potential to lead but need the right development framework to make the transition successfully.

The programme typically runs over an extended period, allowing participants to apply learning, reflect on their development and build leadership capability over time rather than trying to achieve everything through a short, intensive course.

The Academy can include:

  • 360-degree leadership feedback
  • Experiential leadership challenges
  • Leadership workshops
  • Self-directed learning
  • Written development assignments
  • One-to-one coaching
  • Practical coaching challenges
  • Peer learning
  • Senior stakeholder presentations
  • End-of-programme assessment and recognition

The precise structure can be adapted to reflect the needs, strategy and culture of each organisation.

Developing your next generation of sales leaders

Worldpay’s experience demonstrates what can happen when organisations stop treating leadership development as something that begins after someone becomes a manager.

By identifying leadership potential early and giving emerging leaders the right framework, challenge and support, organisations can create a stronger internal leadership pipeline and accelerate the transition from individual contributor to effective leader.

At Delta Learning, we take the same principle into our wider sales leadership development work: leadership programmes should be practical, relevant and grounded in the real situations sales managers and leaders face every day.

Whether you’re developing first-time sales managers, preparing high-potential salespeople for leadership or strengthening an established leadership team, we can design a programme around your organisation’s specific challenges and objectives.
